Hobo Spiders are aninvasive species which are known for their nasty bites that can have necrotic effects. They are predominantly a ground dwelling species that build funnel webs low to the ground and are typically found in basements, crawlspaces and lower levels. They are not known to be avid climbers, but they can climb textured surfaces, bed skirts, carpeted stairs and many other areas. These spiders become increasingly active during late summer and early fall, which is their mating season. These spiders are FAST and will quickly dart across floors in search of mates. The females will leave pheromones in their webs which become major attractants for males during this time.
Hobo Spider Tips
Laundry – Keep all laundry off the floor. This provides excellent habitat for hobo spiders especially if it has been there for a long period of time. Make sure you shake out your shoes/laundry before you put them on.
Keep your bed off the ground – Make sure you have a bedframe and that it is off the wall a little bit.
Bed Skirts – We would advise to remove any bed skirts if you are living in a lower level of a home. This provides an easy path for the spiders to gain access into your bed.
See any gaps or holes? Seal them up with foam or caulk. If you want us to do it, we offer pest proofing services that look much nicer than any standard pest proofing products at home depot.
Wear gloves when doing yard work, Hobo spiders will often make webs around ornamental rocks, walls, log piles, bushy areas.
Got kids? We recommend you clean up the toys daily to prevent any spiders from hiding under them. If left on the ground for a couple days, make sure you inspect the area really well.
See a hobo spider? Don’t reach for the chemical sprays in your garage – a simple contact spray recipe – 1part water, 1 part rubbing alcohol and ½ part dish soap. Try spraying this on any spiders you see running around. This will also work many other kinds of insects but it is strictly a contact spray and will provide zero residual.
